Welcome to 3DDrawing.org

Sketching, Painting, and Creating Beyond 2D

The central hub for an international community of artists, computer scientists, cognitive scientists, designers, and educators.

By tracking physical, bodily movements in space and rendering them in real time within Extended Reality (XR), we transform the air around us into a limitless canvas.

Community

This space is dedicated to sharing resources, mapping future research agendas, and establishing best practices for teaching and exhibiting spatial art. We invite researchers, developers, educators, and creative practitioners to explore our archives, contribute to the discourse, and help shape the future of drawing in three dimensions.

Upcoming Workshop: Dagstuhl Seminar 27022

Sketching Beyond 2D in Extended Reality
January 10 – January 13, 2027

Our modern initiative is anchored by this landmark, invite-only seminar at Schloss Dagstuhl in Germany. This event serves as our collective springboard to bridge the gap between digital art and computer science, building a unified front to support spatial artists, educators, and technology designers alike. The seminar is organized by Mayra Donaji Barrera Machuca (University of Calgary, CA), Johann Habakuk Israel (HTW Berlin, DE), Bret Jackson (Macalester College, US), Daniel F. Keefe (University of Minnesota, US), and Wolfgang Stuerzlinger (Simon Fraser University, CA).

Technology

Our work focuses on designing and implementing novel user interfaces, hardware, and software that respect and amplify the physical intuition of artists. We also seek to unlock a deeper understanding of spatial perception, cognition, and the sensory feedback loops that occur when we create in 3D.

Curriculum

We are dedicated to establishing pedagogical frameworks to train the next generation of artists, while showcasing 3D drawing in public spheres, galleries, and major digital art venues. This includes developing new courses, workshops, and public exhibitions.
